Good to know

What you're actually buying.

Not a list of parts. Four things that change how the afternoon goes.

She comes with you

Pool, lake, boat, dock. The jacket is what turns "bring the dog" into a normal sentence instead of a debate.

You can see her

High-visibility colourways with reflective piping on all four sides — across a busy pool, open chop, or a dock at dusk.

You can reach her

A reinforced handle along the spine, so lifting a soaking wet dog out is one motion instead of a scramble.

It fits her shape

Sized by chest girth rather than weight, with neck, chest and belly straps that adjust independently.

A life jacket adds flotation and makes your dog easier to see and reach. It is a safety aid, not a guarantee, and it cannot prevent drowning. Always supervise your dog in and around water.

The part nobody says out loud

She doesn't want a life jacket. She wants her dog beside her.

The jacket is the mechanism. The adventure together is the product.

A woman sitting beside her Labrador at the edge of a calm lakeLifestyle photography

You didn't get a dog so you could stand at the edge of the pool with your arms folded.

Everyone else is in the water. She's doing laps of the deck, because you're honestly not sure how long she'd last if she got in — and you're the only one watching.

That afternoon is what the jacket gives back. Not a product. An afternoon.

Some dogs are built for water. Plenty aren't.

A heavy front end, short legs, or a flat face all make staying level harder work, and fatigue turns up sooner than owners expect. If you have a Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Corgi, Dachshund, Basset Hound, Boxer, Shih Tzu or Maltese, the chin float and flotation panels are doing more for her than they would for a Labrador.

That doesn't mean everyone else is fine. Strong swimmers still get tired, get cold, misjudge a current, or can't find the steps. The jacket matters most on the long day, not the first ten minutes.

Concern, then preparation, then confidence. Then you actually enjoy it.

That's the whole arc, and the last step is the one you're paying for. You stop scanning the water every four seconds. You put the phone down. You get the summer you pictured when you brought her home.

Bright isn't a style choice. It's how you find her.

Every colourway carries reflective piping on all four sides. Choose the one you like, or the one that stands out most against the water you actually swim in.

How it works

Four things you'd notice on the day something went sideways.

Every part of the SafeSwim does one of two jobs: keep her supported, or make it easier for you to reach her.

The chin float does the quiet work

A buoyant collar sits under the neck, designed to help hold her head above the surface. The head is the first thing to drop when a dog tires, and the hardest thing to lift once it does.

Support where it runs out first.

A handle, not a hope

A reinforced strap runs along the spine, sewn to be grabbed. Lifting a soaked, frightened dog over a pool edge or a gunwale stops being a wrestle and becomes one clean motion.

Something solid to reach for.

Findable from the kitchen window

Sun glare flattens a pool surface and chop hides a small dog completely. A high-contrast panel plus reflective piping on all four sides means something is always catching the light.

You find her in one glance, not three.

Adjusts to her, not to the size chart

Neck, chest and belly straps on quick-release buckles. Three independent adjustment points snug a barrel-chested Bulldog or a narrow Dachshund into the same size without it riding up over the shoulders.

It stays where you put it.

Worth knowing before you compare

"Varies" means exactly that. Some budget jackets do these well, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Sized by chest, not by weight.

Two dogs the same weight can be shaped completely differently. Measure the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and match that number to the table.

Size Chest (girth) Typical weight Example breeds Price
XS 13–18" 5–15 lbs Chihuahua, Yorkie, Maltese $44.95
S 18–24" 15–30 lbs French Bulldog, Pug, Dachshund $49.95
M 24–31" 30–55 lbs Corgi, Basset Hound, Border Collie $54.95
L 30–37" 55–85 lbs Bulldog, Boxer, Labrador $59.95
XL 35–45" 85–120 lbs Bernese, Newfoundland, Great Dane $64.95

Swipe the table sideways to see every column.

  1. Run a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Snug, not tight.
  2. Match that measurement to the chest column. Between two sizes, size up.
  3. Fasten the neck, chest and belly straps so two fingers slide flat under each one. Re-check before every outing.

Straps adjust at the neck, chest and belly, so there is real room to fine-tune the fit inside each size.

From Harbor Hound owners

This is where the reviews go.

No reviews yet — and we're not inventing any.

Harbor Hound is new. The moment real customers write in, this fills with their words, their photos, and a rating calculated from them — the average, the star breakdown, the percentage who'd recommend it. Until then it stays empty, because a five-star average on a store with no orders is the one claim a shopper can actually check.

Be the first to tell us how it went

Before you buy

The questions we'd ask.

Will this teach my dog to swim?

No. It adds flotation and support — it doesn't make a dog a swimmer. Start in shallow water, get in with her, and let her get used to the feeling of the jacket before you go anywhere deep.

She's between two sizes. Which one?

Size up. The neck, chest and belly straps take up the slack, so a slightly larger jacket adjusts down comfortably. One that's slightly too small has nowhere to go.

Is it Coast Guard approved?

No, and we won't put a badge on the page pretending otherwise. The SafeSwim is a flotation aid: it adds buoyancy, makes her easier to see, and gives you a handle to lift her with. We'd rather tell you exactly what it does.

What if she hates wearing it?

Most dogs freeze the first time, then forget about it. Put it on indoors for a few minutes with treats and no water in sight, two or three times across a couple of days. Then the yard. Then the water. Going straight to the pool is what creates a dog who hates the jacket.

Will it fit a deep-chested or short-legged dog?

That's exactly why it's sized by chest girth rather than weight, and why there are three separate adjustment points. Measure the widest part of the chest just behind the front legs and go from that number, not from the breed.

How do I wash it?

Rinse with fresh water after salt or chlorine. Machine wash cold on gentle, then hang to dry. No tumble dryer, no bleach, no iron — heat degrades closed-cell foam.

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over $49. Below that, standard rates are calculated at checkout before you pay.

Enjoy the water. Stay close.

A life jacket is a safety aid, not a substitute for supervision. It adds flotation and makes your dog easier to see and reach. It does not guarantee her safety and it cannot prevent drowning. Stay within reach of the water, check every strap before every outing, and never leave her unattended in or near water — jacket or no jacket.
